UPSC postpones IES/ISS exam application

UPSC (Union Public Service Commission) has now postponed the application process for Indian Economic Service/Indian Statistical Service exam. According to sources, the registration for the exam was supposed to begin on 25 March.

A scrolling message on the UPSC official website says ‘IES/ISS Examination 2020, scheduled to be notified on 25 March has been deferred till further notice.’ The official website can be accessed at ‘https://www.upsc.gov.in/’

While the date of application has now undergone a change, it same for exam conducting are said to be the same as mentioned earlier. As per the schedule released earlier, IES/ISS exam is to be conducted from 26 June onwards.

The exam is supposed to go on for three days. It is to remind that that IES/ISS exam was mentioned in the news circles in the recent past. Application for the exam was supposed to go on from 25 March to 13 April.

However, the reason behind the postponement is clearly not known. Certain sources however feel, the present uncertainty brought by coronavirus scare could have been the reason behind the postponement.

Hope details behind this would be made known at the earliest. As far as candidates willing to apply for the exam are concerned, they must look into the official website of UPSC for regular updates in this regard.

The previous year IES/ISS exam commenced on 28 June and the result for that was announced on 10 January this year. About 64 candidates were selected for appointment. Passing the IES/ISS exam is a gateway for getting into a high profile government job.

ISS officer plays a very crucial role in the statistical thinking of the government and they siginificantly contribute in national and international organisations by ensuring statistical administration, statistical planning, formulation, monitoring and evaluation of development.

IES officer in turn provides economic advise, economic administration and implementation of development programmes and also deals with other areas like economic reforms, regulations, price fixing.

UPSCAs the IES/ISS exam is a gateway for a high profile job, applicants also will be in great numbers. Sources say, more than two lakh registrations are expected every year for the exam. The test is an offline mode one, which means it is held in pen and paper mode.

Tibetan refugee who has come to India before 1 January 1962 with an objective of settling in India and person of Indian origin who has migrated from Pakistan, Burma, Sri Lanka or East African Countries of Kenya, Uganda, the United Republic of Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi, Zaire, and Ethiopia or from Vietnam with a motive of permanently settling in India can also apply.

Except for Indian citizen, rest of others have to submit certificate of eligibility that is issued by Government of India.

Educational qualification for IES is a post graduate degree in Economics, Applied Economics, Business Economics, Econometrics from a recognised university. The same for ISS is a bachelor’s degee with statistics/mathematical statistics/applied statistics as one of the subjects.

Even candidates who hold a master’s degree in statistics/mathematical statistics/applied statistics can also apply. The age limit for the exams is 21 to 30 years.

The upper age can be relaxed for SC, ST category candidates by five years. Other backward classes have upper age relaxation of three years.
