IIT-M director wins prestigious award

IIT-M director wins prestigious award – Director of Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT-M) Bhaskar Ramamurthi has been conferred with prestigious RWTH Honorary Fellow Award recently. Sources say, the award has been conferred on him by RWTH Aachen University in Germany in recognition of his scientific achievements and his contribution towards collaboration between both the institutions.

RWTH University is a sister university of IIT Madras which has been involved with it since the day of its inception in 1959. Bhaskar Ramamurthi received the award at a recently held programme to celebrate the decades-long friendship between both the organisations.

Professor Ulrich Rüdiger, Rector, RWTH Aachen University traced the journey of Professor Bhaskar Ramamurthi from his days as a Ph.D. student in Electrical Engineering from the University of California, Santa Barbara to his work at the Centre of Excellence in Wireless Technology, a public-private initiative at the IIT Madras Research Park that aims to make India a leader in wireless technology.

He said the award is being conferred in recognition of Prof. Bhaskar Ramamurthi’s contribution, both as the Director and as an outstanding scientist, to the strategic partnership between the two institutes.

Through his work at the Centre of Excellence in Wireless Technology, he has created an ecosystem of innovation that inspires many people, he said. Accepting the award, Bhaskar Ramamurthi said when he went to RWTH Aachen University campus, he felt as he was right at home and found many things in common with IIT Madras.

‘I thank RWTH Aachen University and Prof. Ulrich Rüdiger for conferring this award. I accept this award on behalf of the IIT Madras faculty, researchers, and students.’ Bhaskar Ramamurthi also won recognition for his contribution to the success of the Indo-German Centre for Sustainability (IGCS) which is situated at IIT Madras premises and completes ten years this year.
