IIT-M to partner with AIIMS Mangalagiri

There is a development worth noting with regards to Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT-M). The prestigious educational institution based in Chennai will collaborate with AIIMS Mangalagiri to bring out technological solutions with regards to patient safety and quality healthcare.

Professor Bhaskar Ramamurthi, Director, IIT Madras and Dr. T.S. Ravikumar, President, AIIMS Mangalagiri signed the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on 3 February and held discussions on the scope of collaboration as well as the deliverables.

Sources say, partnership between the two institutions will also lead to academic and research collaborations in the areas of mutual interest, exchange of scholarly information, students and faculty along with sponsorship of joint seminars, workshops, health and wellness projects of high impact.

AIIMS Mangalagiri

Professor M. Manivannan, Touch Lab, Biomedical Engineering Group, Department of Applied Mechanics, IIT Madras, who is leading the project from IIT-M said India needs affordable and high quality healthcare technologies, not high end technologies for making high impact, reaching out even the bottom of the pyramid. Both IIT Madras and AIIMS Mangalagiri have the same mission, he said.

Dr. Ravikumar said the strengths that IIT Madras brings with depth in many technological fields such as Virtual Reality, Haptics, AI, Robotics and health economics aligns well with the intention of AIIMS-Mangalagiri of creating happy communities through healthcare transformations.

It is interesting to note that two Virtual Reality (VR) products have already developed in the Touch Lab of IIT Madras and its spin-off company Merkel Haptic Systems were showcased last month at the first Foundation Day of AIIMS Mangalagiri which was celebrated on 24 January 2020.
